Will the capital wars of the future be more important than the trade and intellectual property wars?

This is a theme we introduced last quarter in a book entitled Treasury’s War: The Unleashing of a New Era of Financial Warfare by Juan C. Zarate. He was one of the architects of America’s use of financial tools to impose sanctions on whatever country it chose. Zarate wrote this book in 2013, and it is amazingly farsighted. But, he also argues, what was America’s strength in the past now could become its greatest weakness as the rest of the world mobilizes into free trade blocs and forms together to create systems and new technologies—such as Blockchain and BTR—that can circumvent the U.S. banking systems, SWIFT and the ability of the U.S. to impose sanctions.
